Spotlight: Drug Chemistry
The Drug Chemistry Section is one of six specialized units within the Forensic Laboratories, providing
critical support to the criminal justice system through evidence analysis for law enforcement.
The team of four Chemists with a combined 32 years of experience and a Senior Chemist with 27
years of experience examines powders, tablets, capsules, and plant materials to identify controlled
substances, as well as fire debris and liquid samples from arson cases to detect accelerants.
A key instrument used is the Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), which separates and
identifies chemical compounds with high precision, ensuring accurate and defensible results. The Lab
has four GCMS instruments that run day and night.
Their work provides reliable scientific evidence that supports investigations and court proceedings.
This section meets relevant approved documents on the Organization of Scientific Area Committees
for Forensic Science for the Seized Drugs Discipline.
