Marriage – The County Clerk’s office only has marriage records from 1908-1938, and some older than 1908 but those are sporadic. If the marriage took place after 1938, you will have to contact the local municipality who issued the marriage license. Please note, it does NOT matter where the wedding took place – for example if you received your marriage license from the City of Syracuse but the wedding was in Skaneateles, you need to contact the Syracuse City Clerk: City Clerk Licenses – City of Syracuse (315) 448-8216.
Divorce – Divorce records are confidential, so only the parties involved can request a copy. It can be requested via mail using our divorce request form or in person by stopping into our office with a valid I.D. If requesting via mail, please fill out the information in the appropriate box on the form and have it notarized at the bottom. When requesting by mail we require a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a check or money order for payment. A certified copy is $5.00.
A certificate of divorce is a public document that just states that a divorce took place, if you don’t need the judgment and you just need an official certificate of divorce, the County Clerk can provide this one page, gold-stamped certificate. Anyone can request this document.
The Small Claims Assessment Review (SCAR) is a procedure that provides property owners with an opportunity to challenge the assessment on their real property as determined by the Board of Assessment Review (in counties outside Nassau and NYC) or the Assessment Review Commission (Nassau County) or the New York City Tax Commission (NYC). It is a less costly and more informal alternative to a formal Tax Certiorari proceeding, which can be time consuming and expensive. As outlined in Section 730 of the Real Property Tax Law, property owners may petition the court for review of their property assessment before a specially trained hearing officer for a nominal fee of $30.
