What is HIV PrEP?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is proactive medication that keeps HIV negative people from becoming infected. PrEP is approved by the FDA and is proven to be safe and effective. PrEP can lower risk of transmission by 99% or more.

There are currently 4 different medications available; Apretude, Descovy* (generic available), Truvada, and Yeztugo. The medications work by blocking the HIV virus from copying itself and establishing an infection.

Its effectiveness is even higher if it is combined with other ways to prevent new HIV infections like condom and lubricant use.
In addition to taking medication (oral pill daily, or injections on schedule) PrEP also involves regular visits for STI testing and screening. These appointments can be with the Sexual Wellness Center.
It’s important to note that PrEP is much less effective if the oral pills (Descovy or generic verison, or Truvada) are not taken consistently/daily or if someone misses an injection (Apretude and Yeztugo).
Taking PrEP will not prevent other STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.

Who is it for?

HIV PrEP is for people who are HIV-negative and at high risk for HIV infection. This could include anyone who:

Individuals that have an HIV-positive partner(s)
Individuals that have anal or vaginal sex without condoms and lubricant (unprotected anal and/or vaginal (front hole) sex)
Individuals that have had an STI in the past 12 months
Individuals that have multiple or anonymous partners
Individuals that exchange sex for money, housing, drugs, or other needs
Individuals that inject any substances (including hormones or drugs)
Individuals that have partner(s) who engage in any of these behaviors

Risks are generally determined by clinic staff using best practice guidelines.
