Climate Action Plan
The Climate Action Plan includes a baseline inventory of the County’s carbon emissions, a listing of those emissions by source and recommendations for improving our greenhouse gas inventory. Two of the most important and challenging aspects of the Climate Action Plan are financing and implementing its recommendations, but we are not going to miss out on these opportunities—we are determined to act on our words.
We are excited to move forward with the following actions to be more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint. And while we have already begun to execute these changes in the workplace, throughout the community and at home, there is and will always be more to do.

2018-2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Onondaga County’s 2018-2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI) is an inventory of all carbon emissions resulting from its government operations between the years of 2018-2023. It also gives a listing of the emissions by source, an explanation of the methodology used in tabulating the emissions, a comparison with previous County GHGIs, and preliminary recommendations for improving the County’s carbon emissions tracking efforts.
The 2018-2023 GHGI was prepared between 2024-2026 in order to inform Onondaga County’s forthcoming Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP will give greater insight into the factors behind the County’s carbon emissions and look at alternatives for the County to consider to curb its emissions going forward. Onondaga County is committed to lowering its carbon emissions and the recommendations and alternatives put forth in both the GHGI and CAP will serve to decrease the County’s impact on the climate and are consistent with the County’s efforts to protect, restore, and sustain our natural environment.

This project was made possible in part by funding from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Office of Climate Change. The GHGI Report and data do not necessarily represent the opinions, interpretations therein, or policy of the State of New York. We ask that Onondaga County residents and stakeholders review the 2018-2023 GHGI Report and/or the summary presentation and then complete the survey to let us know your thoughts on the County’s actions to reduce its operational impact on our climate.
