Engage on a Board
The County Legislature appoints individuals to numerous boards, commissions, and subcommittees. These entities are collectively referred to as outside boards because of their independent nature. They consist of volunteers who are appointed from outside of the county’s employ and offer unbiased oversight, expert advice, and support. In addition, the Legislature also supports the work of nonprofit organizations by appointing legislators and residents to their Board of Directors.
All appointments vary in their terms, length of service, and duties depending on the board.
- Residents are nominated. Nominations can originate from various places. You can apply to make your interest in a board known to the Legislature Office.
- Nominations are presented to the appropriate executive. Once an executive or a committee chair decides on a candidate, that individual’s name and resume will be submitted to the appropriate Legislature Committee chair. Candidates are discussed and reviewed in Committee meetings.
- Nominees are voted on. If the coordinating committee votes to advance the candidate, their information is shared with the full legislature and voted on at the next legislative meeting.
- Appointments are confirmed. If a majority of legislators vote to confirm a candidate, in most instances, the Legislature Clerk will follow-up with instructions for swearing in, the schedule, and responsibilities for the board.
Public (and nonprofit) boards and commissions often use technical language. This is because they are aiming for legal precision with the state and local laws under which they operate. This also ensures they keep consistent the decisions the administrative decisions and policies (or rules) they enact. This “legalese,” while it makes their actions legally protected from misinterpretation, creates a barrier for everyday residents who want to understand what is taking place.
The board terms explained below are a plain language explanation of some of the boards and commissions listed. They are provided to help with understanding what the organization does.
