Statement by Leg. Chad Ryan on Independent Redistricting Commission

A Good Governance Slate Local Law

“The local Good Governance law creating a citizen‑led redistricting process will be voted on in July. I brought the proposal to Ways & Means, and the County Law Department is finalizing the updates requested at that meeting.

With expected population changes before 2030, our next census and district maps must be fair and nonpartisan. Across the nation, partisan map‑drawing is weakening voter voices, especially as federal voting protections have eroded. Residents, not politicians, should decide how their districts are drawn.

We’ve already seen this model succeed in Syracuse. At the county level, voters can ensure fairness, avoid the costly legal battles of the past, and choose how future maps are created.

I urge my colleagues to support this measure in July, and I urge voters to consider: Who should shape your voting district—independent citizens or whichever party is in power? Elections should be decided by you.”
