Statement Regarding Term Limits
Statement from County Executive J. Ryan McMahon, II:
“We made a clerical error. That’s on us. As soon as we discovered it, we promptly submitted the veto
resolution that reflected exactly what I had, as County Executive, already publicly announced.
What’s disappointing is what happened next. Instead of acknowledging an obvious mistake, some chose to treat it like a political victory. Everyone knew what I intended which was to veto this measure. If a proposal to make significant changes to the County Charter can only move forward by taking advantage of a clerical error instead of standing on its own merits, it says a lot about how this proposal has been advanced from the very beginning.
Let me be clear. This is a moment to demonstrate the grace and comity our community expects from its
leaders. Our neighbors and voters deserve a government that reflects their civility.
The alternative is a legal process no one wants.
If this proposal ultimately reaches the voters, we hope they’ll finally have the opportunity to debate
whether these changes actually make county government work better for the people we serve. That’s the debate we should have been having all along.”
