Statement from County Executive J. Ryan McMahon, II
“From the beginning, I have clearly stated my support for signing term limits, including for the office I
currently hold. I have also been clear in my belief that a change this significant needs to come through afair, bipartisan process that gives the people of Onondaga County the final say.
Today, we have reached an agreement that allows that to happen.
In November 2026, voters will consider separate 12-year and 16-year term limit proposals for County
Executive and County Comptroller. If one receives majority support, it becomes law. If both do, the one
with more yes votes prevails. If neither does, neither becomes law. In the end, the voters decide.
There has been plenty of disagreement along the way, and at times the fight over process regrettably
overshadowed the policy itself. We can disagree without ending up in court. I am pleased the Legislature agreed to the path I proposed and that we found common ground and a way to move forward.
It is time to get back to the work that matters to the people we serve. They gain nothing from political
fights over who gets the last word.
