County Executive McMahon Announces the Launch of New “Why It Matters” Lecture Series at Rosamond Gifford Zoo

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – County Executive McMahon is proud to announce the launch of its new “Why It Matters” Lecture Series, an educational program designed to give guests a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it means to operate as an AZA-accredited institution. The first event in the series, Why It Matters: Aquatics, will take place Monday, May 18, at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

This engaging new series invites attendees to learn directly from the zoo’s animal care specialists, who will share firsthand insights into the work, science, and dedication that go into providing exceptional animal care and contributing to worldwide conservation initiatives. Each session spotlights a specific area of animal care, with the May 18 event focusing on the zoo’s aquatics team and the species they support.

County Executive McMahon praised the zoo’s continued leadership in animal care and conservation, calling the new series an exciting opportunity for community learning.

“People are often amazed by how much goes on behind the scenes at the zoo. This series opens the door to that world and allows our guests to experience the expertise, care, and collaboration that make their work possible,” said County Executive McMahon. “The Zoo is a valuable educational resource and destination that continues to grow and innovate. Initiatives like this lecture series reflect the zoo’s strong partnership with the county and its ongoing commitment to serving residents.”

Zoo Director Dan Meates said, “We’re excited to welcome our community behind the scenes in a new way. Our team is deeply committed to advancing animal care and conservation every single day. The ‘Why It Matters’ series gives the community a chance to see that work up close and understand why each species, each habitat, and each decision matters.” Meates continued, “This series will also let guests meet the experts who care for our animals and discover the passion and purpose that drive our work.”

Guests will enjoy light refreshments provided by the zoo’s award-winning Catering at the Zoo team and will leave with a deeper understanding of the zoo’s mission, operations, and impact.
