BIOGRAPHY

Legislator Richard McCarron represents the 11th District in the Onondaga County Legislature, covering the towns of Onondaga, Otisco, and part of Geddes. The oldest of seven children, Legislator McCarron was born in Brooklyn and raised in suburban New Jersey before moving to Syracuse in 1988 to attend Le Moyne College.

In 1991, Legislator McCarron joined the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy, serving more than 20 years in roles including Patrol Deputy, Major Crimes Detective, and Patrol Sergeant. After retiring from law enforcement in 2011, he became a real estate agent, and today he leads his own team of realtors, having helped more than 1,000 Central New Yorkers buy and sell homes.

Legislator McCarron was appointed to the County Legislature in March 2023 to fill a vacant seat, and voters have since re-elected him twice. He says his background in law enforcement shapes how he approaches public safety, and he’s focused on supporting police officers and holding the line on county spending, including opposing further public funding for the county’s aquarium project.

In the Legislature, Legislator McCarron serves as a member of the Public Safety Committee and the County Facilities Committee. He has also previously served on the Health & Human Services and Environmental Protection Committees.

Legislator McCarron has been married to his wife, Dawn, for 30 years. They have two children, Patrick and Katie, and three dogs: Jax, Mabel, and Ruby.

Legislative priorities include:

• Supporting law enforcement and public safety across the 11th District

• Holding the line on county spending and opposing further public funding for the aquarium project

• Protecting local zoning authority from state-level overreach

• Ensuring a smooth transition as Jamesville Correctional Facility closes
