Those matters include:

  • Offering recommendations for improvement that protect life safety and preserve property
  • Ensure compliance (through education) of standards put forth by the United State Fire Administration (USFA) and the NYS Office of Fire Protection and Control (OFPC)

The Fire Advisory Board shall consist of not less than five members nor more than 15 members, each of whom shall be appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Legislature in accordance with the provisions of Article XIX, Section 1903 of the County Charter. Members shall serve at the pleasure of the County Executive, provided, however, that no term of appointment made hereafter shall exceed three years in duration and that no member shall serve for more than two consecutive terms. The term of office of each member shall terminate on December 31st of the year in which said appointment expires.

It is the duty of the board to cooperate with the Department of State, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, in effectuating the purposes for which that office was established in relation to such programs for fire training and mutual aid; to act as an advisory board to the County Executive, County Legislature and to the County Fire Coordinator in connection with the county’s participation in such programs for fire training and mutual aid and any other such duties and/or programs the County Executive shall prescribe or require.

Regular meetings of the board will be held during January, April, July and November. Special meetings may be called by the Chairperson. Attendance at a meeting by seven or more members shall constitute a quorum. The County Executive shall appoint a chairperson of the Board. It shall be the duty of the Chairperson to preside over all meetings of the Board and conduct the same in accordance with proper methods of procedure. The Chairperson shall report to the County Executive in writing of unexcused absences of any member from any three consecutive meetings. When that report is submitted and the County Executive receives that report they may consider such member’s position vacant for purposes of appointing a replacement.
