County Executive J. Ryan McMahon, II Appoints Shawn Fiato to County Legislature
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – County Executive McMahon today announced the appointment of Shawn Fiato to District 8 of the Onondaga County Legislature.
Ms. Fiato is a lifelong resident of Syracuse having grown up on the North Side before moving to the Park Avenue neighborhood in 1987 where she and her husband Matt raised their 3 daughters. Upon moving to the neighborhood Ms. Fiato quickly became a strong and passionate leader for the neighborhood and surrounding communities. Her advocacy work would eventually lead to Ms. Fiato serving as President of the Park Avenue Neighborhood Association. In this role Ms. Fiato has fostered community engagement and organized beautification efforts while also securing critical grant funding and low interest loans for the community. Most notably, Ms. Fiato worked with former Congressman Jim Walsh to secure 3.3 million through the Syracuse Neighborhood Initiative. Ms. Fiato has also successfully garnered additional grant funding from organizations such as the CNY Community Foundation, Honeywell Corporation and Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli. She has also spearheaded efforts that have resulted in popular community events such as the annual Earth Day cleanup, Mid- Summer Festival, Victorian Christmas in Leavenworth Park and OHA Ghost Walks.
County Executive McMahon said, “Shawn is the quintessential example of a tenacious, selfless and passionate advocate for her community. She cares deeply about this community and has a proven track record of working with any and everyone in order to get the job done.” McMahon continued, “I am thrilled that Shawn has agreed to serve on the County Legislature and I have no doubt she will be a powerful and effective advocate for the residents of the 8th district.”
Shawn Fiato said, “I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to serve as County Legislator for the residents of the 8th district. I love our community and care deeply about its future. From my advocacy work through the Park Avenue Neighborhood Association to make sure the voices and concerns of the community are heard and addressed to securing critical investments in our neighborhoods from federal, state and local governments, I have dedicated myself to doing everything I can to make our community a place we can all be proud of.” Fiato continued, “I want to thank County Executive McMahon for this opportunity to serve my community in a new and different way and I look forward to representing the residents of the 8th district in the County Legislature.”
The 8th District encompasses Tipperary Hill, Park Avenue Neighborhood as well as sections of Strathmore, Downtown, Near West Side and part of the Town of Geddes.
