Dialing 911 Unaffected by New Area Code Overlay
ONONDAGA COUNTY– County Executive Joanie Mahoney informed County residents today
that dialing 9-1-1 is unaffected by the new area code 680. The new area code will require
residents to do 10-digit dialing (area code + telephone number) when making local calls
beginning on February 11, 2017.
Dialing 9-1-1 for a police, fire, or ambulance response in Onondaga County and the city of
Syracuse will still connect people with the E-911 center.
County Executive Joanie Mahoney said, “In a time of emergency, it is important that people
know you still only have to dial 9-1-1. Our team at E-911 is fully prepared to handle any
emergency and the residents of Onondaga County can continue to expect the same exceptional
service they receive now.”
William Bleyle, Commissioner of Emergency Communications said, “Residents and businesses
should still ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that
are programmed with a 7-digit telephone number are reprogrammed to dial 10-digits.”
Examples can include life safety systems and medical monitoring devices, alarm systems, and
speed dialers.
Callers in Onondaga County are encouraged to dial 9-1-1 in lieu of a 10-digit number whenever
a police, fire or emergency medical service response is needed. Dialing 9-1-1 saves time,
decreases the chance of a misdial, provides more accurate location information and allows for a
faster processing of the call.
