The Probation series of tests are generally                             given every two to four years. If you are currently on a Probation                             Civil Service list, you will be contacted only if there is an opening                             for the position and your score is one of the top three. Please                             do not call our office unless you have been canvassed for the position. These qualifications                             are for general information purposes only and are subject to change                             at the time an exam is announced.<\/p>\n<p><b>PROBATION OFFICER<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The work in this title involves responsibility for performing entry                             level professional work in the field of probation. An employee in                             this class provides evaluation, conducts investigations and supervises                             individuals placed on probation by the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum Qualifications<\/p>\n<p>A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university                             with a Bachelor&#8217;s Degree and two years of counseling or casework                             in an agency adhering to accepted standards in probation, parole,                             social services, psychology or a closely related field; or,<br \/>                            B. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university                             with a Master&#8217;s Degree in Social Work, Education, Administration,                             Law, Sociology, Psychology, Criminology or a closely related field;                             or,<br \/>                            C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as set by                             the limits of (A.)<br \/>                            and (B).<\/p>\n<p>Candidates will be required to successfully complete the NY State                             requirements for firearms training and carry a firearm on duty.                             Candidates will be required to do field work on nights and weekends                             and may be assigned a regular afternoon or night shift. Candidates                             must have a valid New York State driver&#8217;s license and an available                             personal motor vehicle. All candidates must be United States citizens.<br \/>                            <b><br \/>                              PROBATION OFFICER (MINORITY GROUP SPECIALIST)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This position is similar to Probation Officer with the additional                             responsibility of identifying and relating to the specific problems                             encountered by minority probationers.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum Qualifications<\/p>\n<p>Same as for Probation Officer with the following additional qualifications:<\/p>\n<p>A. Completion of a major course (minimum 24 credit hours) of study                             at a regionally accredited college or university in American Indian,                             African American or Hispanic Culture Studies; or,<br \/>                            B. Two years of close cultural association experience with Native                             Americans, African Americans or Hispanics or a work association                             in a criminal justice setting that requires advocacy for or interaction                             with minority ethnic groups. <\/p>\n<p>Please see exam announcements for more detailed explanations and                             definitions.<\/p>\n<p><b>PROBATION OFFICER TRAINEE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On occasion there are trainee positions available in both Probation                             Officer and Probation Officer (Minority Group Specialist) titles.                             There is no experience required for the trainee positions, however                             the Bachelor&#8217;s degree must have included thirty semester credit                             hours in social or behavioral sciences.
