Summer Storm Warnings

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in and close to the “watch” area. The Watch is issued to ALERT citizens to the possibility that storms with damaging winds, lightning, and large hail may develop.

A Severe Thunderstorm WARNING is issued when a severe thunderstorm has been spotted and WILL move through your area soon.  Postpone outdoor activities if storms are imminent.

  • NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!!
  • When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.
  • Stay in safe shelter at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder

A Tornado Watch indicates conditions are favorable over a large area for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes to develop.

A Tornado WARNING advises citizens that a tornado has been detected or seen, is on the ground and moving, and is expected to move through your area soon.

TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY!

  • If Outdoors Seek shelter in a substantial building immediately.  If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch or low spot cover your head.  Do not try to outrun a tornado.
  • If at Home: Go to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of the building. Stay away from windows. Gent under something sturdy or cover yourself with a mattress.
