STEAM school to provide new & critical educational opportunities for students throughout County

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – County Executive J. Ryan McMahon, II today applauded the County
Legislature for their vote today in support of a Countywide Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Math (STEAM) School. The vote was unanimous.

Our community has a generational opportunity to be a partner with the City of Syracuse,
Syracuse City School District, OCM Boces and New York State in the creation of a Countywide
STEAM school. The school would be located at the historic Central High School in downtown
Syracuse and be open to students across the County. The current plan calls for 60% of the
students to come from the City of Syracuse and 40% from the rest of the County.

County Executive McMahon said, “If our community is going to remain competitive, we must
have a workforce that has the skillsets employers are seeking. The County Legislature took an
important step today in recognizing that fact when they expressed their support for a Countywide
STEAM School.” McMahon continued, “Thank you to my partners in the County Legislature for
their support and I look forward to now working with our representatives in Albany to make this
project a reality. We are all in this together and providing our children from across the County
with this opportunity is simply the right thing to do.”

Onondaga County and Central New York is home to many companies looking to grow and
expand. The list includes SRC, Anaren, Hill Rom and many more. In order to secure new
growth, our private sector partners must see we have the workforce they need. This is as much
about jobs and economic growth as it is about providing our children with the education they
need and deserve.
